The parking lot at the Paces Mill entrance to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is much larger, but there is the standard $5/day fee for these parks. Also at this entrance is a large picnic area and boat ramp.īeginning at the Paces Mill entrance, the trailhead is at the far end of the parking lot away from the river. The path stays level, following the Chattahoochee River for the first half a mile. ![]() Immediately afterward, the trail crosses over Rottenwood Creek where it flows into the Hooch. Here, the trails for the West Palisades parks branch off on two dirt trails to the right. Stay on the paved path, which now follows Rottenwood Creek north, running parallel to I-75 and then Cumberland Boulevard. Cross over the creek again and shortly afterward are several areas that allow easy access to the creek to explore around and enjoy the water. At 1 mile in, the trail emerges from the tree cover it’s had so far and gaining most of its elevation in the next. During the summer months, this stretch can be draining under the hot sun. Along this section, the trail connects to Cumberland Boulevard by way of a short side trail.Īt 1.6 miles, the Chattahoochee park ends and the trail becomes the Bob Callan trail. Without a sign alerting the hiker to this fact, you would never know the difference. Purple Gentian braves the chill October winds at the river's edge. The Yellow Trout Lily and the White Bloodroot signal spring's arrival. The cold water of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, is ideal for trout, but can be dangerous to humans. A valid Georgia fishing license and trout stamp are required. All baits are allowed (along this river section). The cold river contains 22 species of game fish, including trout. The last two boat launches as you float down the river are located here, make sure you don’t miss them. The trailhead for the Rottenwood Creek Trail is located adjacent to a large open meadow ideal for group activities. Take a break at the gravel bar and watch the boaters float by before heading back up the hill to your vehicle.Īt the Paces Mill entrance you will find picnic tables and grills located beneath a canopy of hardwoods near the river. Continue hiking along the trail and catch views of the Devils Race Course Shoals from the river’s edge. The trails offer opportunities for jogging, bird watching, informal sports, plant identification, water quality study or quiet moments.Īt the Akers Drive entrance you will find the trailhead to the trail that winds its way down hill through the woods to the river flood plain. Trails are beautiful throughout the year as they wind through the floodplains and atop ridges. The unit consist of 302 acres with approximately 3.5 miles of trails and just over 2 miles of river shoreline. The Palisades Unit west of the Chattahoochee River is in Cobb county.
